Our turkeys are not just for Thanksgiving, but they are definitely more popular then. We also don't compete with the big box stores. They are not the same and shouldn't be compared. If you are looking for a cheap turkey, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a pasture-raised turkey free of hormones, antibiotics and other weird things, you might think about buying a turkey from us.
We generally raise broad breasted turkeys, and sometimes we raise heritage turkeys. Broad breasted turkeys are very meaty and are the standard turkey eaten in the United States. They typically dress out between 15-30 lbs. Toms are larger. Hens are smaller. The longer they are raised, the larger they will get. Heritage turkeys are beautiful and cool. When you think heritage, think wild and able to live on their own, find their own food and raise their own young. These birds are harder to find as chicks, more expensive to buy, take longer to raise and are pretty skinny compared to broad breasted turkeys. They typically dress out between 8-15 lbs and have less meat on their bones.
Baby turkeys are purchased in the spring and are typically ready by the end of summer. Many of our customers like a local fresh turkey harvested just in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Because these turkeys are raised longer, they will be bigger and range around 25-30 lbs for broad breasted and 12-15 lbs for heritage.
Customers need to pick up birds from the farm. If this is a problem, let us know. Prior to cooking your bird, it is pretty important to brine. Look this up on the internet, as there are many ways to do this. Essentially, it is soaking the bird in salt water with sugar and spices.
Something to consider is to buy several turkeys, remove their breasts for separate cooking, remove the rest of the meat for pure ground turkey and using the carcass for amazing turkey stock/soup. Turkey meat freezes well before and after cooking.
Average broad breasted turkey weighs 20 lbs and costs $100. Average heritage turkey weighs 12 lbs and costs $60.
