How often do you wake up with a plan for the day, and when you look back on the day as you crawl into bed, you realize that not one thing went as you had originally planned? That is not saying it was a bad day, just not as planned or maybe as productive as you had hoped. Well, at the G&E Ranch, we feel that is our everyday. We are very list/calendar oriented and have had things on our to-do list since moving into the house almost 5 years ago. We have hopes that every evening after work we can get a little task complete, just trying to get caught up; or on weekends to wake up early and be productive with no interruptions. HAHAHAH… We will believe that when it happens.
One thing we love about our spread is that people enjoy visiting. To us it is home. We love the amazing sunsets and quietness, and we have become a bit accustomed to it. To others, it is an oasis… a break from the traffic in the city, a place to bring the kids to run and play, a place to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the solitude. We love it all and welcome it all!! It usually makes Monday mornings come way to quick and makes me think we didn’t get enough accomplished. However, those visits with friends and family are irreplaceable.
Our latest project has been replacing old fascia boards on the house, washing the exterior, and painting it. Greg took last week off to get it started, and I took a couple days off to help. We had extra help to get things going over last weekend, so we were excited to get started. While three men worked most of the weekends, we also had a total of 11 additional people come in and out of the house visiting (some planned and some not). And on top of that, what project goes as planned? When your wife is walking around on the roof cleaning up behind you and finds a big rotten spot that needs to be replaced, your plans change. All fascia work stopped, and attention was shifted to fixing the roof that had obviously been leaking at one point but never fixed properly. Once that was repaired, attention was shifted back to the fascia.
You must think we got a lot accomplished if Greg took the entire week off, but no, not as much as planned. For those of you that don’t take your job home with you, be thankful. From my experience, most people don’t have that luxury. They are looking at emails all hours of the day, working on lesson plans on the weekend for the next week, dictating notes in the evening from that day, etc.… So, it should be no surprise to that Greg spent many off-and-on hours in the office working
At this point, the facia portion of the project is almost complete, house is about 75% painted, and the unexpected roof project is fixed. Thankfully, we have another week set aside to continue painting the house and start on the garage. Hopefully life doesn’t throw us anymore curve balls during this project. Before we know it, it will be butcher time for a lot of animals, and we will have our hands full with that.
FUN FACT of the week: Occasionally, we get leftover food from Gleaners (an organization that helps feed those in need) and spent grains from a brewery. Last week, we picked up four pallets of old food. We have been filling up a kiddie pool nightly for the animals to enjoy.
