There are a lot of miscellaneous supplies we have on hand around the ranch for emergencies. A lot of them we use regularly, but we always buy more and keep plenty on hand just in case.

In the last blog, we touched on food. We always have several ways to cook food and enough gas or propane to run equipment/appliances. We always have plenty of lighters and cooking supplies on hand.  Since we can food regularly throughout the year, we keep extra lids and supplies on hand to can food in an emergency. We have bulk spices that would last a while too.

Other things we have are warm clothes, camping gear, water filters, hand tools, bleach, and salt. In an emergency, tools can help us build things and make repairs. Bleach can sanitize things, particularly drinking water. Salt can help preserve food. We have a large and dedicated 1st aid kit, penicillin that can be used for both animals and humans, a hand-crank radio and lots of batteries.

We are not here to get in a debate about guns, but they are a necessity. I mean, it is the easiest way to harvest a large animal and keep predators away.  We have plenty of guns and ammunition for hunting and self-defense, but by no means are we gun fanatics. It is a small and practical assortment for basic preparedness.

With all these supplies, our home will be the first place we will go and stay if things get bad. However, if they get really bad and we need to flee, we have an airplane. LOL, it is not the reason we have one, but we would use it if we needed to. It is almost always full of fuel. We could easily jump in it with some gear and be in Canada in 2.5 hours.

For reference, here is a book we used when organizing our food prep. I forgot to mention it last week in “being prepared – food.”
