This past weekend, we went and picked up a new just-weened steer. He’s a pure breed black Angus that is about 3 months old.
It took some work from the rancher and well-trained dogs to get him loaded into their trailer after Greg took the truck and trailer to the rock quarry to weigh in empty. We made it a family affair with Peyton and I joining in on the adventure. My mom, Chris, and our good friend Amy also went along. The steer weighed in at 410 lbs. (somehow we didn’t get any pictures)
Once back to the Ranch, the steer was roped and firmly coerced into the pasture with the Gator. It was an all-out wrestling match for about 30 minutes. His pasture was adjacent to the rest of the animals, so he had about 24 hours to acclimate. He was moo’ing all night long. The second day at our house, we moved him into the high use pasture with the Scottish Highland Bull and other animals. It looks like things are going smoothly now.
This steer is scheduled to be butchered in about a year-and-a-half.
People have asked if we have a name…not really into naming animals that are going to be eaten, but since this week was St. Patties day, Clover has been thrown out there. If you have any ideas, let us know!!
